Deborah Carthy-Deu – The Second Puerto Rican Miss Universe

Born on Janury 5, 1966, in an urban district of Santurce in San Juan, Deborah Ftima Carthy-Deu became the second Puerto Rican to won the prestigious Miss Universe 1985. On July 15, 1985 in Knight Center of Miami in the State of Florida, Puerto Rico made another mark in the history of beauty for bringing home the crown of Miss Universe.

Deborah is the daughter of Ramn Carthy Sanchez and Vicky Sanz Deu. Her father is of Irish and white Puerto Rican descent and is a professional photographer and director while her mother works as the director of an academy for modeling and ballet at Academia de Ballet y Modelaje. She went to a catholic school for her elementary education and attended the Commonwealth High School for her secondary education.

At a young age of thirteen, Deborah spent her summer taking dance lessons in New York City in the United States. At thirteen, she also auditioned and was accepted as a member of Ballet Concierto, a dance theater company.

In her college days, she was crowned as Miss San Juan 1985. The same year, on April 27, 1985 she won the title of Miss Puerto Rico, a title that made her the official representative of Puerto Rico in the Miss Universe 1985 pageant. On July 15, 1985, she won the crown of Miss Universe in Miami, Florida, making her the second in her country to won the crown after fifteen years. The first Miss Universe title won was on 1970 by Marisol Malaret. Indeed, with Deborah Ftima Carthy-Deu contributions, she gave so much pride to Puerto Rico.
