Ballet Dancing For Any Age

Ballet dancing is not just for the young, athletic, artistic or supple person. Everyone can gain something by going to ballet class. Ballet dancing offers you a break from the stresses of daily life, and offers you new mental and physical challenges. In class you can momentarily become part of that grace and beauty that you see on stage, and it all becomes part of you in the way that you walk, hold yourself, and even in the way that you think. Ballet dancing also provides a great workout with lasting benefits of toning, strengthening and stretching. One also tends to build up a camaraderie in class, as nobody understands your passion for dance as they do.

Ballet dancing classes for adults generally have the same structure as those for children, but may be a little more aerobic so that muscles stay warm. Combinations tend to be less technical and more dancey. Adults need to also be realistic about their physical limitations. An older body that has its bone structure set, cannot be pushed in the same way that a young more pliable body can. You won’t get much more turnout than you already have as an adult, but you can strengthen the body and muscles to enable you to use what you do have. Aim to work slowly and with proper form, to avoid injury, rather than force your legs up or out.

If attempting pointe work for the first time as an adult, you will need to come more than once a week for your ballet dancing. Pointe work must be integrated with several weekly technique classes, as strength and alignment is paramount.

If you want to take your dance classes to the next level as an adult, cross training will benefit you. Take Pilates classes for instance, which will strengthen your core muscles and do wonders for your developpes.

If you are a late starter and want to dance professionally you will have to work especially hard and find the best training that you can. You will probably need to take more than one class a day. Plenty of dancers who start dancing at a later age, as well as dancers who haven’t got the physical attributes to become a ballet dancer are cast in many other stage productions, where they can put their dancing talents to good use.
